Peat moss

Peat moss (Sphagnum spec.) is the vital component of raised bogs. Special characteristics allow peat moss to survive in moore areas:

• It can take up nutrition in extremely low concentrations. Meanwhile it emits hydrogen ions which results in an acid environment which is inconvenient for other plants
• They keep growing indefinitely. While the lower parts die off, the upper ones keep growing. 
• It reduces its growth to a minimum during dry periods. If there is enough water, the can store 30 times more than the weight of their dry mass.
